Romania through international eyes
Writers for Vivid

Mark visited Romania twice in the late 1980s under Ceausescu, and developed a fascination for the country. After a period working for the British Foreign Office Research Department, he wrote a PhD on British-Romanian relations at London University, and was then a Leverhulme sponsored researcher at the Nicolae Iorga Historical Institute in Bucharest.

He has published several academic articles on British-Romanian relations and has written in the press on a wide range of subjects concerning Romania and Eastern Europe, as well as undertaking commercial research for Oxford Analytica. A short period working for a charity in Iasi gave him a perspective on some social problems affecting Romania.

Mark also has a law degree and is particularly interested in constitutional issues. Since March 2003, he has been Managing Director of Romania Think Tank, which supports the free market economy, independence of the judiciary and freedom of the mass media.

Mark is a keen traveller and has visited most parts of Romania including many remote areas. He is particularly interested in Orthodox spirituality and tradition. He also enjoys theatre, music and film.
